The University of Alberta is seeking their next Vice President (Finance and Administration) to take on a unique opportunity and help lead an unprecedented period of transformational change. The Vice President (Finance and Administration) will join the University of Alberta as it reimagines its academic and administrative structures to create a more efficient, innovative and sustainable model of the modern post-secondary institution. The University of Alberta will build on its place as a leader in higher education and research, and its central role as a driver of economic growth, innovation, and creativity, in the province and beyond. The Vice President (Finance and Administration) will play a key role in leading and supporting this transformation and will be part of a team that has the potential to inspire a new model for the post-secondary sector across the country, positioning the U of A as a national and international leader in entrepreneurial and innovative solutions in higher education.
At the U of A, the Finance and Administration portfolio provides the appropriate systems and resources for the academic community to advance and achieve its vision, to retain and attract talented people, and to provide best in class support to the university community. The unit focuses on financial and human resources stewardship and services, on enhancing the quality of staff, on providing training and change management while improving business processes and IT solutions. Finance and Administration works continuously on strategic initiatives to provide robust systems and deliver effective services to the university community.
As a member of the leadership team reporting directly to the President and working closely in partnership with the Provost and the Vice President (Academic), this Vice President supports the U of A’s academic, teaching and research mission and strategic direction through planning, directing and overseeing the administrative and business functions of the university. The Vice President (Finance and Administration) is the University’s Chief Financial Officer and is responsible for coordinating and managing the university’s operating and capital budgets and for safeguarding and optimizing return on the university’s assets, financial and human resources, and operating, capital, research and other revenues and expenditures annually. The Vice President (Finance and Administration) plays an integral role in the achievement of the U of A’s vision by overseeing the provision of responsive and accessible institutional services.
In addition, the Vice President (Finance and Administration) will work with the President and Provost in implementing the President’s vision of the U of A for Tomorrow, which outlines the path for academic and administrative restructuring in response to the current challenges. As part of this plan, the Vice President (Finance and Administration) will lead the Service Excellence Transformation team, which is focused on making the most of these economies of scale, streamlining processes and increasing efficiency across U of A’s administrative services.
As the ideal candidate, you bring advanced education and professional credentials (e.g. CA, CPA, CMA, CGA), along with leadership experience within a diverse portfolio of functions and in organizations with complex governance structures and broadly accountable contexts. You have demonstrated that you are innovative and able to envision and introduce new ideas, systems, processes and programs. You possess the strategic acumen and global thinking to enable you to set your sights on the horizon, to understand the goals of the university and to translate them into plans that support the university’s mission, allow students, faculty and staff to realize their goals, and ensure the University’s sustainability in the broadest sense. You are service, solutions and systems focused and are passionate about how you and your team can collaborate with and support others in the pursuit of the academic, teaching and research mission of the university.
