Job Description

Trade Remedies Authority (TRA)

Senior Executive Officer (SEO)

Location: North Gate House, 21-23 Valpy Street, Reading, RG1 1AF

2-year fixed-term contract

The UK’s exit from the European Union has created the need for a brand new trade body. The European Commission handled trade remedies on behalf of the UK, therefore for the first time in many decades, the UK needs to take on the task of investigating unfair international trade practices and import practices such as dumping (selling goods overseas at prices lower than in the domestic market), and industrial subsidies. These practices, along with unexpected surges in imports, can damage UK industries. The Trade Remedies Investigation Directorate (TRID), within the Department for International Trade (DIT), is currently undertaking this work until it is established as the Trade Remedies Authority (TRA), which will be a Non-Departmental Public Body outside of the wider civil service. It is within this forward-thinking organisation that you could find an exceptional challenge.

It is vital that we know our decisions are based on reliable, accurate and complete evidence putting our verification work at the heart of our investigations. The skills required to undertake verification work is similar to that utilised in commercial financial audit or forensic accounting work. audit using your professional experience in this area you will support our investigators to increase their capability to assure the financial data they have received.

With this  focus on helping us build our verification expertise, you will be part of a small team who will be instrumental in designing and delivering training for colleagues, coaching and supporting them on casework and providing independent quality assurance reviews of their work where appropriate. There may be opportunities to travel both domestically and internationally as you support the case teams.

You will have experience in a commercial financial data audit or forensic accountancy role, with a Charter-level qualification or part-qualification from a recognised accountancy body. Crucially you will love analysing complex data, and you will have an inquisitive nature. With the capacity to identify areas that require further investigation, your exceptional communication and influencing skills will be underpinned by the willingness to work as part of a team. We will expect you to be comfortable explaining technical financial and accountancy issues to non-accountancy audiences, and you will be capable of building relationships based on trust – using a professional scepticism when facts need to be challenged.

This is an exciting moment for the UK. With the establishment of the TRA, we are ensuring a fair basis on which business will be conducted, supporting every sector with responsible trade practices, and ensuring UK jobs are protected. Join us in this vital work, and you will be exposed to career defining opportunities. With access to a total rewards package and the scope to network extensively across a truly progressive department, you are sure to excel in our team and put your career on an exceptional path.
