Audit and Business Services



Working Hours

The normal hours of work are Monday to Friday 09.00 until 17.30 with a break of 1 hour for lunch


Reporting directly to Branch Managing Partner and Regional Managing Partner, this position holds the responsibility, with the other general practice partners and managers, for running the Audit and Business Services departments in a reliable, professional and commercial manner and maximising the efficient use of the Group’s resources.  This position holds joint responsibility for the management of staff ranging from senior managers to trainees.


This post holder will have a shared responsibility with other Partners, Managers and Team Leaders for the success of the departments and the Firm generally.  This will mean they must consider the overall interests of the Firm before those of themselves, their teams, their departments or their office.


Main duties

  • To continue to develop the high quality provision of audit and accountancy services provided by Wilkins Kennedy
  • To provide operational leadership to the Audit and Business Services teams
  • To take on, manage and develop a client portfolio of over £500k
  • To oversee of the implementation of new polices/procedures and other projects



Client service

Build up a portfolio of clients and forge strong relationships

  • Ensure all personal targets are met or exceeded
  • Ensure departmental targets are reached or exceeded in relation to:
  1. Production
  2. Fees
  3. Margin (Recovery)
  • Commercially manage and develop own (mixed) client portfolio
  • Ensure clients are always kept up to date with relevant technical and industry developments
  • Maintain good working relationships with internal clients in all regional offices


Deliver high quality service

  • Ensure a clear understanding of client service needs, and ensure they are fulfilled (including coordination with other WK teams/ departments as necessary)
  • Ensure team produce high quality work in terms of timeliness and technical competence. Review staff work as appropriate to ensure high quality and compliance, where appropriate, with the relevant firm and regulator standards
  • Actively seek ways to add value to clients



Motivate, coach and develop

  • Support, advise, coach and motivate team members when required and ensure they fulfil their responsibilities
  • Ensure the Managers are made aware of any staffing issues
  • Ensure optimum flow of work and production from team members as a whole
  • Assist with the preparation and assessment of staff budgets and capacity planning for the department
  • Succession planning and knowledge sharing within the team to ensure adequate cover for all roles at all times


Technical knowledge and experience

Audit and Business Services

  • Take full ownership of all engagements fully from start to finish, involving the partner as appropriate, to the extent that has been pre-agreed
  • Ensure partner review comments are minimised by dint of the quality of the audit or the work planned and delivered
  • Research any technical/other issues and either resolve or identify options to discuss with the partner
  • Ensure all outputs (including reports, accounts and letters) are drafted to a high standard, so that any partner amendments become a self-development opportunity
  • Take full responsibility for delivery of outputs to clients in portfolio
  • Attend courses etc to ensure technical knowledge is continuously strengthened, and that CPD is complied with (staff with a formal qualification)
  • Provide up-to-date technical advice to clients, other partners and staff
  • Ensure maintenance of service and technical standards /procedures, and review these when necessary
  • Ensure departmental compliance to relevant business risk issues



  • Pursue chosen specialism (industry and/or technical) in consultation with partners
  • Take a lead role in developing the specialist team under guidance of the relevant partner
  • Design a personal specialist development plan, which will form part of the annual development plan and be reflected in the client portfolio


Practice/Business Development

Win profitable new clients, increase profits from existing clients

  • Proactive marketing and generation of new work i.e. identify additional services and opportunities for chargeable work from existing clients, seek out new work from clients, partners and staff in both offices and market the services of the audit and accounts teams
  • Cross-sell other WK services e.g. VAT, Financial Services, Corporate Finance, Banking & Finance, Insolvency, Tax, Payroll
  • Attend networking and other events to promote the business
  • Assist or deliver presentations or pitches to clients or potential clients as required
  • Prepare and present technical issues internally and externally at workshops and seminars
  • Assist in preparation of topical articles
  • Provide managers of other departments with information about the Audit and Business  Services departments  (e.g. through case studies, client profiles, seminars etc) to enable them to identify clients or prospective clients who may benefit from those services


Commercial acumen

Develop attributes that will lead to improved profitability for the firm

  • Negotiate fees and over-runs directly with clients in portfolio, mentored by the engagement partner if appropriate
  • Agree and raise all bills with clients in portfolio, for authorisation by the engagement partner, as appropriate
  • Understand the department’s KPIs, how these apply to all clients in portfolio, and ensure compliance or improvement
  • Achieve or  improve upon assignment budgeted fees and profit



Knowledge Skills & Experience



  • Professional qualification e.g. ACA, ACCA gained ideally in a general practice environment
  • Significant post qualified experience within a management role
  • Have experience of managing a sizeable client portfolio with a broad mix of audit and accounts clients
  • Experience of dealing confidently with a variety of business and personal clients, especially within the owner managed business sector
  • Good networking skills
  • Proven business winning skills with the ability to generate new business through existing or new clients
  • Track record of successfully managing, motivating and leading a team
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Diligent, accurate and hands on approach to work
  • Maintain adequate CPD in all areas of the field of accountancy
  • Flexible approach
