A key part of the National Audit Office’s (NAO) strategy is to make greater use of technology in the delivery of its audits. This includes the objective of embedding data analytics in our “business as usual” audit processes.

To this end we have recently developed a Cloud based data platform (called AIMS, Audit Information Management System) which is used as a central location to upload client data, analyse that data using in house developed applications process, and store securely that data. The only data we are currently uploading, analysing and storing is general ledger data obtained from the NAO’s financial audit clients.

We are seeking an experienced Data Analytics specialist to support with supporting and enabling our Financial Audit teams to make better use of the AIMS platform.

The purpose of this role will be to support our Financial Audit Data Analytics Manager, and another Data Analytics Specialist, with:

• the development of collateral to support audit teams getting better general ledger data from clients; and
• support audit teams (where needed) with this process and with loading this data on the AIMS during
audit busy season.

Key tasks

Delivery of data analytic engagements

The first key requirement of this role is to work with the Financial Audit Data Analytics Manager, and another Data Analytics Specialist to develop collateral (templates, guidance and training) to support audit teams with getting better general ledger data from clients

The key requirement of this role is to work with a group of Financial Audit team to help them obtain general ledger data, cleanse that data (as needed) and then upload that data on to the AIMS data platform.

Skills required

There are a range of technical skills we will be looking for from the person appointed to this role:

• The role requires a good understanding of auditing (including financial auditing and its associated professional standards requirements) and the methods and techniques typically applied in the audit process;
• The person should be experienced in the use of data analytics for audit work and so be capable of providing solutions that address audit teams’ needs;
• The person should have an understanding of data structures as understanding this will be integral to helping develop such solutions. Our data analytics work typically involves the major ERP systems (e.g. SAP and Oracle) so knowledge of these systems would be an advantage. However our around 400 audited bodies have a wide range of other finance systems so ability to deal with a range of systems will be required;
• The NAO audit team uses IDEA to analyse data so knowledge of this tool would help. For application development we use R and Python. For data visualisation we use Tableau, so knowledge of some of these tools / languages would be helpful;
• An understanding of some of the key business processes operated by our clients (e.g. purchase to pay, order to cash and payroll) would also be helpful;

The person needs to possess good communication skills and interpersonal skills as they will be expected to work closely with audit teams and client teams in developing and delivering data analytic solutions. They must be comfortable presenting data analytics solutions to audiences, including senior level client staff, and they need to be able to explain technical aspects of their work and their solutions to non-specialists clearly and succinctly as they will often be required to act as the intelligent interface between client technical IT staff and the NAO audit teams.Educational requirements
