Safestay has created a brand of contemporary hostels. It has grown from its creation in 2014 to operate 18 hostels in 12 countries in Europe in 2021. We have set up home in Europe’s most vibrant locations, from Brussels to Lisbon and London to Athens, where Safestay is taking the hostel experience to a whole new audience. In 2019 the turnover of the Group was £18.4m with an aggressive expansion plan for the coming years. Safestay Plc is listed on the London Stock Exchange (AIM). The head office is located in London.

The Finance Controller is part of the finance team. A dedicated, diligent individual who can support our growth. Based at our head office in London, our Finance team works closely with the operations and management to make the right decisions and working with teams across the business to support the hostel operations and work on a range of exciting projects. They’re responsible for the meticulous management and reporting of our accounts, financial control, risk management and compliance.

Reporting to the Head of Finance, the finance controller is a key member of the team, managing all finance processes for all entities spread across 12 different countries (UK, France, Spain, Portugal, Belgium, Austria, Poland, Slovakia, Germany, Greece, Italy and Czech Republic) with opportunities to expand further in the coming months. This is a challenging role which requires not only very strong technical expertise and good organisation skills, but also a high level of EQ to forge strong relationships with our operation, management team and advisers.




Accounting / Payroll

  • Manage the month end process in coordination with outsourced and in-house accountants

  • Annual and Interim Group consolidated accounts under IFRS

  • Coordination with external auditors for Annual audit

  • Annual statutory accounts for UK entities

  • Coordination with outsourced accountants to produce local statutory accounts and tax returns for non-UK entities

  • Payroll and Pension compliance and process including coordination with local payroll providers


  • Coordination with tax advisers for the production of annual tax returns for UK entities

  • Ensure the group is fully compliant with local tax regulations; submitting all returns and ensuring timely and accurate payments. Liaising with Authorities where required

  • Update and Manage the Transfer pricing process

  • Coordination of submission and payment of indirect taxes across the Group


  • Production of monthly management accounts in coordination with outsourced accounting firms

  • Cost control, including management of the UK energy contracts, reconciliation of accounts

  • Monthly management reviews with Operations / Executive team

Finance Process 

  • Maintain high level of internal controls within the Group

  • Supporting the business for launching new hostels or acquisitions

  • Maintenance and management of accounting system, Microsoft Dynamics Business Central

  • Management of supplier invoicing process and maintenance of invoice approval system, Palette

  • Administer the banking arrangements for the Group

  • Liaise with banks and payment providers when required


  • Recruit, train and develop the central finance team

  • Coordinate and work with the network of outsourced accountants

  • Act as Finance representative to wider business organisation, handling queries and providing financial training where necessary.

  • Produce ad hoc reports and presentations as required by the business


Skills and experience


  • Fully qualified with experience in a first-tier audit or accounting firm

  • A good degree from a great university, or equivalent highly relevant experience

  • Strong Tax experience

  • Proven Management experience

  • Highly proficient in Microsoft Excel

  • Eagle-eyed ability to spot trends and pick out inaccuracies

  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills

  • Inquisitive and analytical mind, you thrive on tackling complex problems, and constantly building and refining process with rigour and diligence

  • Not afraid to challenge the status quo

  • Well organised, able to multitask and be a team player
