Job Description

Overall purpose of role

The post holder will report directly to the CEO and will be responsible for creating a best in class culture across its various departments, including Finance, IT, Property, Central Operations and CCAB. This role will lead the overall operational efficiency of ICAEW and its departments and enhance matrix working across departmental boundaries.

The post holder will work with the Chief Executive on major operational challenges. 

 

Main responsibilities of role

  • The CFO will be a member of the Board of ICAEW; fully contributing to the formulation of ICAEW’s overall strategy and monitoring its implementation on behalf of Council.

  • Work with the Chief Executive, Chief Operating Officer and Chief of Staff on longer term planning including reviewing key strategic priorities and translating them into the Operational Plan. 

  • Support the Chief Executive and play a major role in the development and implementation of ICAEW's global strategy.

  • Develop and implement ICAEW’s financial strategy, ensuring that strong financial controls are in place to meet statutory and regulatory requirements and to deliver value for money.

  • Lead IT, Property, Finance and Central Operations, with responsibility for delivering their strategy.

  • Lead policy formulation in the areas of responsibility and present proposals to the Board and Council.

  • Lead on the principal risks and operational plan coverage, with regular reporting to the Board.

  • Lead in the drive for achieving efficiencies and effective use of resources.

  • Provide regular and insightful management information, forecast analysis and commentary to the Board. 

  • Develop strong professional relationships with:

  1. the Chief Operating Officer and Chief of Staff and other senior staff across ICAEW to ensure good cross-functional working and work with colleagues to provide strategic direction and leadership of ICAEW.

  2. internal/external auditors, investment managers and pension fund trustees, amongst others.

  • Build and lead a high performing, collaborative and diverse team to ensure good cross-functional working.

  • Act as chairperson for the following committees: Health and Safety, Business Continuity, Anti-Bribery and Corruption, IT Steering Group and Data Privacy and Cyber Security Group. 

  • Attend and participate in the following meetings as required:  Committee of Council, Audit Committee, Investment Committee, SPF Trustee Board and SPF Funding and Investment Committee.

  • Maintain ICAEW being carbon neutral and continue to integrate the SDGs’ into our business processes and measure and report on progress.

  • Lead by example in championing diversity and inclusion across ICAEW.

  • Specific duties will vary from time to time in line with the business needs

Candidate Profile

  • A chartered accountant or other relevant qualification.

  • Demonstrable leadership success at a senior executive level, with exposure to a non-executive board.

  • Significant strategic and operational management gained in a large and complex organisation.

  • Previous experience of leading a Finance team and ideally with exposure of IT/Property.

  • Demonstrable experience of fostering cultures of inclusivity and equity, building roles and structures which empowered and developed high performing teams.   

  • Proven experience of managing complex relationships and directing multiple teams, enhancing inter-departmental collaboration.  

  • A lateral thinker with excellent organisation and communication skills who is tactful, respectful and diplomatic whilst action orientated, and results focussed.

  • Demonstrable experience of planning and leading strategic initiatives/evidence of contribution to strategy and corporate direction.

  • Strong commercial orientation with the stature to act as an ambassador for ICAEW in respect of its complex network of stakeholders and the appetite to support international growth.

  • Proven experience of dealing with complex relationships.
