Job Description

Kent College is a co-educational nursery, day and boarding school for pupils aged 0 to 18, located at two sites, set in exceptional grounds with outstanding facilities. 

The Accountant is responsible for the management of finances for the school and compliance with Charity Commission Guidelines, along with accountability for ensuring that the finance of the School's trading subsidiary is tightly managed. The role holder will report to the Bursar and have management responsibility for a team of 3. 

The successful candidate will have a degree or equivalent professional qualification in financial or management accounting, accompanied by experience in a busy environment with ever changing priorities and challenges, as well as being highly computer literate and confident with MS Excel and Google sheets. The role holder must be able to use their own initiative, demonstrate excellent attention to detail, accuracy and organisational skills, whilst maintaining good communication with the team and the wider school community.

This position is for maternity cover and the successful applicant will ideally be able to start in April.

Job Description

Responsible to:        Bursar

Direct Involvement with:    All members of staff; outside agencies      

Hours:            3 to 4 days per week (negotiable) / Full year 

Salary:            Competitive dependent upon experience and qualifications

The Role            


The Accountant is responsible for the management of the finances of the School and its compliance with Charity Commission guidelines. The role also has accountability for ensuring that the finance of the School’s trading subsidiary is tightly managed.

The Accountant has line management responsibility for the Bursary team of 3 staff, comprising a Finance Assistant, a Purchase Ledger Clerk and a Fees Receivable Clerk.

Key Responsibilities

  • Management of the finance function, overseeing and mentoring the Bursary team

  • Preparation of monthly actuals, rolling forecasts, variance analysis and commentary, demonstrating a detailed business understanding

  • Ongoing control of budgets with production of periodic reports and challenging budget holders during the financial year

  • Preparation of monthly and termly management accounts and cashflow statements, submitting to Head Office at the Methodists Independent Schools Trust (MIST)

  • Management of the School and trading subsidiary’s cash position, providing detailed analysis through regular forecasting

  • Preparation of other statutory returns as required by MIST Head Office and other regulatory bodies

  • Maintenance of 5+5, CapEx schedule, full year budget and rolling forecasts

  • Presentation of termly financials to the Governors’ Finance & General Purposes (F&GP) Committee

  • Preparation of statutory accounts and associated schedules in respect of the School and trading subsidiary for the MIST Group’s auditors

  • Preparation of quarterly VAT Returns for School and trading subsidiary

  • Maintenance of financial ledgers, accounting processes and internal controls

  • Review and create financial process efficiencies, including supporting MIST in managing the Group’s transition to a new finance system

  • Maintenance of the School Risk Register

  • Prepare, implement and uphold School Financial Policies

  • Provide general support and cover to the Bursar as required.

The Person

Essential Qualifications

  • Degree or equivalent professional qualification in financial or management accounting

  • Evidence of continuing professional development relevant to this post


  • Demonstrate experience of budget control procedures, financial and management accounting

  • Experience of preparing Charity Accounts and managing VAT

  • Demonstrable experience of managing a team

  • Previous experience of working in an educational environment or similar would be advantageous but not essential

  • An understanding of Charity Law would be preferable
