I met a Finance Director of an entrepreneurial business in Darlington - he's looking to recruit a Financial Controller.

If you were to meet him too, I'm confident you'd feel welcomed and comfortable - I laughed and feel I got to know him well pretty quickly.

This is a great position for you if you're qualified or nearly there and want to be shown the ropes and supported into the job.

It's not often you meet someone who says, 'the person we recruit will not be expected to make many contributions within the first 3-6 months as they'll be settling in'.

Nothing too complex when it comes to the accounts - accuracy, improvements, and deadlines are top priorities.

When you're working for this employer, you'll be given full exposure to the business and the chance to progress to FD as he moves into an MD role.

The finance is 'not complex' - they have high volumes of transactions and as they have over 90 shops, cash and banking are a top priority.

It's an involved role - they want you to take the first few months getting to know the business and team before expecting you to contribute - I thought he came across as very fair, honest, and approachable/friendly.

They have 25 people based in Darlington HQ and 450 in total.

Finance consists of FD, FC, an Assistant Accountant, 1 in HR/Payroll, 2 in purchase ledger, and 1 in credit control.

You'll be communicating and working with all levels of staff - from retail managers/workers through to the c-suite board level.

It's got a 'family feel' - they all get on, and many have worked with the team for 10+ years.

You'll be responsible for finance, month-end, stock, variances, budgeting, forecasting, management packs, HMRC, and helping the team - ensuring accuracy and deadlines are met.

If you like variety, this will give you that as you'll be also working with KPIs, completing analysis - fine detail and overview. There are not many variables - more of a quick analysis.
