We help our clients stay ahead of changes that impact their businesses, navigating complexity and risk. We deliver deep tax technical, people and legal expertise, while providing the critical context to make informed and compliant decisions. With clients ranging from multinational organisations and public sector bodies to entrepreneurs and family businesses, the work we do is diverse.

Hear from Ed Stacey, Tax People Leader about what a career in Tax could mean for you - from development, to our culture, to what we value in our people when building our team.

The PwC network is a network of independent firms (member firms) that are separate legal entities operating in their own legal structures within their territory.

The Network Tax group is a team of tax and accounting professionals that supports the PwC network leadership team on a variety of tax matters concerning the PwC network and its member firms.  Network Tax is part of Internal Firm’s Services (IFS), which ultimately reports to the Global COO.  The team is led by a tax partner in the UK firm with personnel based in the UK (5) and the US (10).  Our clients are wide and varied, being a mix of local tax teams within each PwC member firm, other global legal and operational staff based in the UK and around the world and the PwC network leadership team

We are looking for an independent and responsible person with international tax experience to join our team.  Ideally, the candidate will have experience of assisting in managing tax projects for clients, including international tax structuring, tax treaty issues and tax compliance. The role suits an experienced tax manager who is a “self starter,” capable of taking direction but also comfortable with leading themselves and others to implement and manage projects and processes. The candidate should be able to work autonomously while being an active part of the UK based team reporting to both senior managers and the UK based tax partner. The Network Tax UK based team is based in London (No. 1 Embankment Place).  However, in line with the firm’s strategic direction, the successful candidate could be based in a PwC regional office with travel to London on a fairly regular basis.

Working in the Network Tax team, you will gain an insight into the PwC network and see the exciting initiatives that are being rolled out by member firms to their partners and staff to support the PwC purpose.

The overarching role of the Network Tax team is to manage tax risk and to protect the PwC brand.

You will work as part of a team to identify issues and seek solutions in a fast paced environment and have access to tax subject matter experts from around the PwC network.

You will have an opportunity to work on a wide range of network initiatives undertaken throughout the PwC network, including new or amended structures, as and when required.

The core responsibilities will be to manage any direct and indirect tax issues and obligations for network entities and to assist in providing tax governance of certain PwC network entities.  This will require you to develop a close working relationship with the operations, finance and OGC contacts for these entities as well as with the local direct and indirect tax compliance teams in a number of PwC member firms, including Germany, Netherlands, the UK and the US.  This will extend to reviewing tax accounts and draft statutory accounts generally for these entities.  You will also need to stay current on tax developments that impact these entities.  You will have access to resource materials and subject matter experts to assist you.

While providing services to the PwC network you will need to consider how the tax issues identified impact the network as a whole and the PwC brand.

You may also be involved in specific tax risk management work on a “needs” basis including:

  • Providing tax advisory support on network-wide transactions and complex structuring projects;

  • Providing tax oversight for network entities, including solving complex international tax issues and having an awareness of tax compliance projects for network entities;

  • Advising on current and future risk management matters for the PwC network; and

  • Using technology to assist in providing our services

Preferred Experience and Skills:

  • Ideally, you are currently working in an international tax team or you are familiar with international tax issues.   Experience of working with UK, US or a major European country tax legislation will help you to identify tax issues.

  • A tax or accounting qualification.

  • Ability to research tax information, and to monitor changes in key areas of tax legislation.

  • Good communication skills are important. You will need to build and keep good working relationships with tax, finance and legal professionals from around the PwC network.

  • Ability to plan quarterly and annual tasks, and to manage tax projects on a “needs” basis.

  • Ability to review and use data to support tax compliance activities for network entities and analysis work generally.

  • Ability to identify and escalate questions or issues quickly so that support can be provided.

  • Some limited travel may be required.

  • Desirable skills sought for the role:

  • Experience of working in an in-house role is helpful but this could also suit someone wanting to make a move from client practice to an in-house role.

  • The ability to establish good working relationships and a desire to develop your own network of subject matter experts.

  • Sufficient commercial understanding to appreciate what people are trying to achieve; to `put yourself in others shoes’.
